Glee 2x22 "New York"
The McKinley High School glee club, New Directions, travels to New York City to compete in the Nationals competition. In the hotel, glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) tasks the students with writing two original songs to perform on stage. Will leaves with the excuse of filling out paperwork to visit the stage of April Rhodes' musical, CrossRhodes. He performs "Still Got Tonight" on stage. A security guard overhears the performance and tells Will that he has real talent. The New Directions are disturbed by rumors leaked by Vocal Adrenaline coach Dustin Goolsby (Cheyenne Jackson) about Will's plan to leave the glee club to sing on Broadway. Will explains that he has fulfilled his dream of singing on a Broadway stage and chooses to stay with New Directions.
After spending hours trying to compose music, Brittany (Heather Morris), Artie (Kevin McHale), and Puck (Mark Salling) only come up with "My Cup", reminiscent of Rachel's (Lea Michele) previous composition, "My Headband". Seeking fresh inspiration for their songwriting, they all sneak out of the hotel room to explore New York City while singing a mash-up of "I Love New York" and "New York, New York".
The friendship of Rachel (Michele, left) and Kurt (Colfer, right) is further developed in this episode.
Encouraged by his fellow male glee club members, Finn (Cory Monteith) asks Rachel on a date in Central Park. The two enjoy dinner at Sardi's where they meet Patti LuPone. As the date draws to a close with Puck, Artie, Sam (Chord Overstreet), and Mike (Harry Shum, Jr.) serenading the two with "Bella Notte", Rachel feels torn between Finn and her dreams of being on Broadway, and leaves after refusing to kiss Finn. After breakfast at Tiffany's, Rachel and Kurt (Chris Colfer) sneak onto the stage of Wicked and sing a duet of "For Good". Rachel realizes that her true love is Broadway and vows to return to New York City to go to college; Kurt also says he'll attend college in New York.
At Nationals Rachel runs into a nervous Sunshine Corazon (Charice) in the bathroom. Rachel apologizes to Sunshine for previously making her feel unwelcomed at McKinley. Admitting her jealousy for Sunshine's talent, Rachel corrects her mistake by reassuring Sunshine as she steps out onto the stage to open for Vocal Adrenaline with "As Long As You're There".
As the New Directions are about to go on stage, Rachel professes her love to Finn, but is still torn between her career aspirations and love. At the end of their duet of "Pretending", an enthusiastic audience falls silent when Rachel and Finn kiss. New Directions closes their performance with "Light Up the World". A jealous Jesse St. James confronts Finn after the performance, deeming the kiss unprofessional and asserting that it will cost them the championship. New Directions does not advance to the top 10 showcase round of competition, finishing in 12th place out of 50 competing show choirs.
Back in Ohio, Kurt recounts his experience in New York City to Blaine (Darren Criss). They then profess their love to each other and Kurt states that "It's been a good year for Kurt Hummel". It is revealed that Sam and Mercedes (Amber Riley) are now dating in secret. Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany reaffirm their friendship; Brittany tells Santana she loves her more than she's ever loved anyone. Rachel meets up with Finn and the two contemplate their Nationals kiss; Finn reminds her that she has a year until graduation and kisses her. The New Directions celebrate their 12th place achievement at the final glee club meeting of the year.
Glee 2x21 "Funeral"
Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), director of New Directions, the McKinley High School glee club, hires Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff) – an alumnus of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline – as a consultant to help them develop a strategy for winning the upcoming Nationals competition. Jesse convinces Will to use Vocal Adrenaline's strategy, which is to identify the club's best performer and center the entire performance on that person, and Will decides to hold auditions to determine who will be featured. Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), and Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) all audition, with Jesse and Will as judges. Jesse is highly critical of Santana, Kurt, and Mercedes' performances, while he praises Rachel's performance. He tells Will that Rachel is the clear winner, which angers Santana, Mercedes, and Kurt. Ultimately, Will decides to ignore Jesse's advice and goes back to their original plan of having the whole group singing original songs.
In this episode, Sue (Lynch, left) is thankful to Will (Morrison, right) for supporting her through her sister's funeral.
Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is upset over the death of her sister, Jean (Robin Trocki). She lashes out by re-routing the glee club's flight to Nationals in New York City to layover in Tripoli, and kicking Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter) off the Cheerios. Sue allows Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) and Kurt to plan Jean's funeral and help her sort through Jean's personal belongings; she also asks the glee club to perform at the funeral, as she believes no one will be there. While going through Jean's belongings, Finn and Kurt discover that Jean's favorite movie was Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and arrange a funeral inspired by the film. At the funeral, an emotional Sue is unable to continue reading her eulogy after a few sentences, and Will reads the remainder for her. The glee club then sings "Pure Imagination", a song from the film. Touched by his support, Sue tells Will he is a good friend and he has what Jean had and she doesn't: a pure heart. She also tells him that she will no longer go after the glee club, as she will run for the United States House of Representatives, and wishes him good luck for the first time. She then apologizes to Becky, reinstates her as a member of the Cheerios, and tells her she will be captain of the squad. As a final act of reconciliation, Sue asks for and receives a hug from Becky.
Finn realizes his true feelings for Rachel during the funeral, and breaks up with Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) afterward. He later thanks her for not quitting glee club because of their breakup; Quinn tells him that quitting would have ruined her "big plans" for New York, and refuses to tell him what they are. Finn had, just minutes before this, seen Jesse and Rachel sharing a brief kiss on stage; after they leave, he brings from behind his back a flower. Will's ex-wife, Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig), who was in on Sue's earlier plot to re-route the glee club's flight, gives Will first class plane tickets on American Airlines to New York for the entire club, telling him they were a donation from an airline executive. She tells him she is moving to Miami to start over with her life and to pursue her retail management career, and they say goodbye.
Glee 2x20 "Prom Queen"
The race for prom king and queen intensifies as school reporter Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman) reveals that Finn Hudson and Quinn Fabray (Cory Monteith and Dianna Agron) are the front-runners for the crown, while Noah "Puck" Puckerman and Lauren Zizes (Mark Salling and Ashley Fink) are in second place. Jacob informs Puck that his relationship with bad girl Lauren has hurt his own bad boy image at the school. Meanwhile, king and queen contenders Dave Karofsky and Santana Lopez (Max Adler and Naya Rivera) intensify their efforts with their anti-bullying group, the Bully Whips, in order to boost their standing.
Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) requests that the McKinley High glee club perform at the prom due to Air Supply having canceled. Club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) is reluctant to have the glee club perform, as it would distract from preparations for their upcoming Nationals competition, but after Figgins offers the band's fee to help fund the glee club's trip to Nationals, he agrees.
Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) asks Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) to be his date to the prom; Blaine reveals that he was beaten up after a formal dance at his old school shortly after coming out, but agrees to go. Kurt's father Burt (Mike O'Malley) and Blaine both express serious misgivings about Kurt's daring homemade outfit for prom, but Kurt is determined to be himself and wear the outfit as planned.
Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) and Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), both dateless for the prom, join together and ask Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) to take them both to what they call "Prom on a budget". While practicing a potential song for prom, "Rolling in the Deep", Rachel is joined by ex-boyfriend Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff). He apologizes for how he treated her, and joins her group for prom.
Puck concocts a plan to regain his image as a troublemaker by spiking the punch bowl at the prom, and attempts to recruit Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) to help him. Artie, still upset about his breakup with Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris), is determined to go to prom with her and asks her to prom in the front of her entire home economics class by singing Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely?". She turns him down, reiterating that she will go to the prom alone. Artie then agrees to go along with Puck's plan to spike the punch.
In this episode, the bullying of Kurt (Colfer, left) by Dave Karofsky (Max Adler, right) ends with an apology.
While walking through the halls with Karofsky, Kurt realizes that the last week has been free of bullying and that this could be a sign that people are slowly starting to accept homosexuality or at least be indifferent to it. He sees Karofsky's pain at being closeted, and suggests that he should come out. Karofsky refuses but makes a tearful apology to Kurt for his past bullying.
Prom starts off with Artie, Sam and Puck's rendition of "Friday". Rachel follows with a rendition of "Jar of Hearts"; during the song, Rachel shares several glances with Finn, who is on the floor dancing with Quinn. Blaine follows with a rendition of "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You", backed up by Brittany and Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz); during this song, Finn is upset that Jesse begins kissing Rachel's neck on the dance floor, and gets into a fight with him. Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) throws both Finn and Jesse out of the prom.
Puck and Artie attempt to execute their plan to spike the punch, but Sue catches Artie pouring liquid into the bowl and orders him to her office. She threatens to perform amateur dental work on him until he reveals the mastermind behind the plan; knowing that Puck would be expelled from school, Artie refuses to implicate him, and ultimately confesses that he used non-alcoholic lemonade.
Karofsky is elected prom king. After a short hesitation, Figgins then announces that the prom queen is Kurt Hummel. Kurt, humiliated, runs from the gym and is consoled by Blaine in the hallway. Angered that the students chose a covert method to tear him down (i.e., by secret ballot), he decides to return to the gym to be crowned prom queen, to show that he is proud of who he is and what he has with Blaine. As he is crowned prom queen, Kurt comments, "Eat your heart out, Kate Middleton!" which garners applause from the crowd. Figgins announces the traditional dance for prom king and queen, and as Karofsky and Kurt approach the dance floor, Kurt tells him that this is his opportunity to come out of the closet. Karofsky hesitates for a moment, but flees the dance floor, leaving Kurt standing alone. As Mercedes and Santana sing "Dancing Queen", Blaine joins Kurt of the dance floor, and the two dance in front of the entire student body.
Glee 2x19 "Rumours"
In "Rumours", cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) revives the student newspaper The Muckraker in order to publish libel about the McKinley High glee club in another attempt to destroy it from within by causing conflict between the club's members. Her ally, club director Will Schuester's (Matthew Morrison) ex-wife Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig), suggests destroying the club from without by detaching Will from the club.
Brittany's (Heather Morris) new internet talk (Fondue for Two) show gives the newspaper some grist when she inadvertently seems to out Santana (Naya Rivera) on it. Santana berates Brittany, and Finn (Cory Monteith) nearly comes to blows with Sam (Chord Overstreet) about another item that pairs Sam and Quinn (Dianna Agron); although Quinn and Sam both deny it, Finn plans a stakeout with Rachel's help to see if it's true. The stakeout at a shabby motel instead spots Sam and Kurt leaving a room, after which Sam goes back inside alone.
April Rhodes (Chenoweth) visits Will; her all-white revival of The Wiz flopped on Broadway, and she asks for his help with her new project: a one-woman show entitled Crossrhodes. Will tells April about the current glee club tensions, which she likens to Fleetwood Mac when they were making their Rumours album.[2][5] Will and April sing "Dreams" to the club, and he assigns the album to get them focused back on music.
Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) confronts Brittany about the true nature of her relationship with Santana. This leads Brittany to break up with Artie and he sings "Never Going Back Again" after she walks away. Santana then further opens up to Brittany about her true feelings, singing "Songbird" to her. Santana agrees to go on Brittany's online talk show to let Brittany ask her to the prom, but she chickens out at the last minute. During an interview for The Muckraker, Brittany overhears Santana claiming to be in love with her prom king/queen running mate Dave Karofsky (Max Adler).
Most of New Directions, minus Kurt and Sam, meet for coffee and speculation about the absent pair. Quinn maintains that Kurt would never cheat on his boyfriend Blaine (Darren Criss), and states that Sam isn't gay. When Finn and Rachel resume their stakeout that night, this time they see Quinn leaving the same motel room, Sam giving her a hug before going back inside; school reporter Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman) had previously spotted Finn and Rachel there, and taken pictures of them.
The next day, the newspaper has an item about Finn and Rachel, making Quinn furious with Finn, and Finn is already mad about Quinn being at the motel with Sam. They confront each other, then sing a barbed version of the duet "I Don't Want to Know" to the glee club after which Quinn gives an ultimatum: if Finn wants their relationship to continue, he can't sing any more duets with Rachel. Rachel has other ideas, and later sings "Go Your Own Way" to Finn, who plays drums for the song; the resulting recriminations end in the revelation that Sam was at the motel because that's where his family lives since their house was foreclosed on because his parents have been unemployed for months—Kurt was bringing Sam some clothes, and Quinn was helping Sam babysit his younger brother and sister. Sam storms out. When the club discovers from Quinn that Sam has pawned his guitar, they buy it back for him, and offer their support. Sam brings his brother and sister to a glee club rehearsal, and everyone sings "Don't Stop".
Glee 2x18 "Born This Way"
During dance rehearsals for the upcoming Nationals competition, glee club co-captain Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) accidentally breaks Rachel Berry's (Lea Michele) nose. Her doctor (George Wyner) recommends septoplasty and elective rhinoplasty; Rachel considers modelling her nose after Finn's current girlfriend Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron). Both Finn and Puck (Mark Salling) oppose her planned transformation. Puck tries to help her accept her nose as part of her Jewish heritage, and recruits Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), who convinces her to look to her idol Barbra Streisand, who refused to succumb to pressure to alter her nose. Ultimately, Rachel decides against having surgery.
Club member Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) uses Rachel's broken nose as a launching point to highlight the other group members' flaws. Aiming to help them achieve self-acceptance, glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) urges them to embrace their perceived flaws, by printing them on T-shirts to be worn during a group performance of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way". He also encourages school guidance counsellor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) to confront her OCD; she begins treatment with a psychiatrist, Dr. Shane (Kathleen Quinlan).
In this episode, Kurt (Chris Colfer, pictured) returns to McKinley High School.
Santana, who is a closeted lesbian, decides to run for school prom queen in the hope that she can win the love of her best friend Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris). She realizes that popular jock Dave Karofsky (Max Adler) is also in the closet, after noticing him checking out Sam, and hatches an elaborate scheme to attain her goals: she threatens to out Karofsky unless he agrees to stop the bullying that drove Kurt from McKinley and the glee club. The pair begin an anti-bullying scheme to entice Kurt back and bolster the glee club's chance at Nationals, though mostly to boost Santana's popularity before the prom. They also become one another's "beard" to bolster their heterosexual facades.
Karofsky issues an apology to Kurt at a group meeting involving Will, Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba), and their fathers. Though Kurt wants to transfer back to McKinley from Dalton Academy, he is hesitant until Karofsky admits privately that Santana's prom queen scheme is behind his change of heart; Kurt agrees to return, but only if Karofsky will start a school PFLAG club with him. On the day of his return to McKinley, Kurt's boyfriend Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss)—backed by the Dalton Academy Warblers glee club that Kurt had belonged to—serenades him in farewell with a rendition of Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know". Kurt marks his re-entry to New Directions with a solo performance of "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from Sunset Boulevard.
As the race for prom queen intensifies, Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink) begins campaigning against Quinn. She discovers that Quinn's first name is Lucy, and that she used to be an overweight outcast who had rhinoplasty before re-inventing herself and transfering to McKinley. Lauren attempts to sabotage Quinn's campaign by revealing her former image to the other students, but it backfires when Quinn's popularity actually increases amongst the girls like Lauren. Humbled, Lauren apologizes, but Quinn commends her for being proud of herself. Brittany shows off her shirt to Santana, and gives her a shirt reading "Lebanese", believing that it reads "Lesbian". The two end in a disagreement, Brittany storming off saying that if Santana loved herself as much as Brittany did, she would put on the shirt and dance with her. The episode closes with the club, minus Santana, embracing their identities and performing "Born This Way". Towards the end of the song, Emma finally changed her T-shirt that she acknowledges her issues with OCD, having hidden it with an original T-shirt that said 'Ginger'. Karofsky and Santana watch from the audience, Santana wearing her "Lebanese" shirt.
Glee 2x17 "A Night Of Neglect"
Low on funds for an upcoming competition trip, glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) suggests that the club members sell saltwater taffy to raise money. New Directions members Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.), Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) and Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) reveal they are on the academic decathlon team, which is also having funding problems. Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) is the fourth, stand-in member, and proves surprisingly knowledgeable about cat diseases. Will's girlfriend, substitute teacher Holly Holliday (Gwyneth Paltrow), suggests holding a benefit concert for the decathlon team instead of selling additional taffy. Former McKinley student Sunshine Corazon (Charice), who defected to rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline, is awarded the closing number at the concert after promising to bring her six hundred Twitter followers.
Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) creates a "League of Doom", with members that include Will's ex-wife Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig), Vocal Adrenaline coach Dustin Goolsby (Cheyenne Jackson), and former McKinley High teacher Sandy Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky), to destroy the glee club. Tasked with breaking up Will and Holly, Dustin makes a failed attempt at seducing her. The targeted relationship begins to crumble anyway, when Will helps his former love Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) with her stress-worsened OCD, after she reveals that her husband Carl Howell has asked for an annulment.
Former New Directions member Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) attends the concert, accompanied by his boyfriend Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss). They are confronted by closeted homophobic bully Dave Karofsky (Max Adler), who is forced to back down by Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), in retribution for previously throwing a slushie in her face. Sunshine and her followers pull out of the concert on Dustin's orders, and Sandy and McKinley students Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman), Azimio (James Earl) and Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter)—the only other members of the audience—heckle the glee club. Tina is reduced to tears by their booing; Mike fares better as the hecklers are given taffy to keep their mouths full. During the intermission, Holly talks with the three students about the hidden cost of insults and suggests they cheer as opposed to jeering, but they opt to leave instead. Holly performs Adele's "Turning Tables" to Will. Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), who on the advice of Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink) has spent the lead-up to the concert making outrageous demands on her fellow club members to gain greater respect from them, performs the final number. She wows a stoned Sandy, who donates some of his drug profits to fund the academic decathlon team.
Holly takes a job in Cleveland, leaving Will free to pursue Emma, while Sue decides to bring Terri further into the game. The episode ends on the academic decathlon final's tiebreaker question, which is in the category "hermaphrodite Nazi sympathizers", a topic earlier taught in an irreverent history lesson by Holly.
Glee 2x16 "Original song"
After the Warblers rehearse "Misery" in preparation for Regionals, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) confesses his jealousy over how the Warblers always give Blaine (Darren Criss) the solo performance. Later, Kurt honors the sudden death of the Warblers' canary mascot, Pavarotti, with a performance of "Blackbird". Blaine is visibly moved by Kurt's emotional tribute and realizes that he has feelings for Kurt. He later argues that the Warblers shouldn't rely on him alone for Regionals, and proposes that instead of "Misery", the group should feature a duet. Blaine is adamant that Kurt be his partner for it, and the vote in favor of it is nearly unanimous. As the two are about to practice their duet of "Candles", Blaine confesses that he wanted to spend more time with him, and they share their first kiss.
Rachel's (Lea Michele) second attempt at an original song, "Only Child", proves to be only a small improvement over "My Headband". Finn (Cory Monteith) encourages her to dig deeper into her pain to find her song. Quinn's (Dianna Agron) desire to become prom queen prompts her to get close to Rachel in order to run interference between her and Finn. In doing this, she supports Rachel's idea of writing original songs for Regionals; the members of New Directions eventually agree, due to the fact they received a cease and desist letter from My Chemical Romance saying they can't perform "Sing" for Regionals. Sue later admits to forging the letter in yet another attempt to sabotage the glee club. Rachel confronts Quinn about her relationship with Finn, trusting her to be honest. Quinn admits they have been together for a couple of weeks and tells Rachel that she doesn't belong in Lima. Quinn says she will remain behind with Finn and Rachel can't hate her for helping to send her on her way. Hurt, Rachel goes home and uses Quinn's words as a springboard for writing a new song.
Brittany (Heather Morris) confronts Santana (Naya Rivera), saying that she misses their friendship. However, Santana is hostile and angrily says that Brittany "blew [her] off", while Brittany shows that she is upset that Santana is still dating Sam (Chord Overstreet) even after confessing her love to Brittany. The two are interrupted by Sue, finding that she has filled their lockers with dirt, an event later brought up during the Glee club's song writing session.
In rehearsal, director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) passes out rhyming dictionaries to help the glee club with songwriting. Showcasing their original songs, Santana sings "Trouty Mouth" as a tribute to Sam's large mouth and Puck (Mark Salling) sings "Big Ass Heart" to Lauren (Ashley Fink). Mercedes (Amber Riley) later sings "Hell to the No". While Will agrees that it's a great song, he says that it's not appropriate for Regionals, also noting that the best songs "come from a place of pain". After the club members share recent hurtful anecdotes, he writes "Loser Like Me" on the board, deciding that could be the title for the yet-unwritten song.
The judges for this year's Regionals competition are local broadcasting legend Rod Remington (Bill A. Jones), Tea Party candidate and home schooler Tammy Jean Albertson (Kathy Griffin), and former exotic dancer Sister Mary Constance (Loretta Devine). Aural Intensity opens the competition with "Jesus Is a Friend of Mine", a song that Sue selected to cater specifically to the judges. The Warblers open with Kurt and Blaine's duet of "Candles", followed by "Raise Your Glass". Rachel conveys feelings to Finn through the performance of her original song, "Get It Right", reflecting on the past failures in their rocky relationship and expressing her deep desire to reconcile with Finn. The New Directions respond to Sue's bullying with their second original song, "Loser Like Me", an anthem dedicated to the underdogs of high school. New Directions wins the Regionals competition. Rachel is honored with New Directions' first MVP award.
Glee 2x15 "Sexy"
Substitute teacher Holly Holliday (Gwyneth Paltrow) gives sex education lessons at McKinley High. Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), director of the school glee club, New Directions, asks her to educate the group through song, prompting Holly to perform Joan Jett's cover of "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)". Will later rehearses a rendition of Prince's "Kiss" with her, culminating in a kiss. Holly turns down his advances, explaining that she would end up hurting him.
Former New Directions member Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) hears from Aural Intensity coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) that New Directions is planning a sexually provocative routine for the upcoming Regionals competition. Blaine (Darren Criss), the lead singer of Kurt's new glee club, the Dalton Academy Warblers, responds by having the Warblers give a sexual performance of "Animal" by Neon Trees. Aware that Kurt is worried about his lack of sexual knowledge, Blaine visits his father, Burt (Mike O'Malley), and prompts him to give Kurt "the talk" about sex.
At McKinley, glee club members Puck (Mark Salling) and Lauren (Ashley Fink) plan to make a sex tape, until Holly informs them that it would be considered child pornography. A shocked Puck joins the celibacy club as a result. Annoyed by Holly's lessons, celibacy club advisor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) has the group perform the Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight" for New Directions, unaware that the song is about sex. Her husband Carl (John Stamos) approaches Holly about counseling, revealing that Emma is still a virgin. Emma confesses that she may have feelings for Will, and Carl tells her he will be moving into a hotel until she is certain of her feelings.
Holly also counsels glee club members Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris) when they express confusion about their sexuality. She joins them for a performance of "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac, after which Santana confesses that she is in love with Brittany and wants to be with her. However, after Kurt's experiences being a gay student at McKinley, Santana is afraid of being bullied and ostracized by the student body for being in a same-sex relationship. Brittany reciprocates her love, but explains that she also loves her boyfriend Artie (Kevin McHale) and will not break up with him, to Santana's distress.
Lauren is annoyed with Puck for joining the celibacy club, but when he explains that he is trying to take responsibility for his actions, she kisses him and agrees to join too. Quinn (Dianna Agron) shows up to the celibacy meeting with a hickey on her neck, stating that she burned herself curling her hair. It is later shown that Finn (Cory Monteith) gave Quinn the hickey. Holly is dismissed from her teaching position due to parental complaints about her classes. She tells Will that she wants to learn about romance; he offers to teach her, and they kiss.
Glee 2x14 "Blame It On the Alcohol"
Concerned about recent underage drinking incidents, Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) decides to have a cautionary assembly and commissions the glee club to perform a song. In an attempt to get inspiration to write a good song for Regionals, Rachel (Lea Michele) throws a party for the glee club members at her house, a party crashed by Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss). Puck (Mark Salling) convinces her to serve alcohol, and everyone gets drunk except for Finn (Cory Monteith) and Kurt. They all play a game of Spin the Bottle resulting in Rachel and Blaine kissing, making him question his sexuality. After their kiss, Rachel and Blaine drunkenly perform the song "Don't You Want Me" on karaoke. Because Blaine is so drunk, after the party Kurt drives him to the Hummel residence, where they sleep, fully clothed, in Kurt's bed. Burt (Mike O'Malley) is not pleased about this level of intimacy and speaks to Kurt about it. Kurt grudgingly agrees to get permission first next time, but asks Burt to educate himself on gay relationships so Kurt can come to him for advice in the future. Meanwhile, the glee club members come to school with very bad hangovers and perform the song "Blame It", impressing Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) with their "realistic acting", but he thinks the song is inapproriate for the assembly as it glorifies drinking. He tells the kids to try and find a song that shows the dangers of drinking, but they tell him that it's hopeless. Meanwhile, Mr. Schuester and Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) indulge in a little fun of their own to reduce their stress and perform the song "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" at a cowboy bar.
Once home, Will drinks more beer as he drunkenly grades all his students A+, and later drunk dials who he thinks is Emma (Jayma Mays). Rachel goes on a date with Blaine, making Kurt jealous and angry as he's still convinced Blaine is gay, going so far as to claim that bisexuality does not exist. At the assembly, New Directions perform a rousing version of Kesha's hit single "Tik Tok", but the song comes to an abrupt end when Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera) throw up from intoxication. After the performance, Sue (Jane Lynch) publicly humiliated Will by playing the message Will left her over the school PA system, in the middle of class. On the message Will expresses to Emma how he "loves the way she eats with plastic gloves", and even asks her to come over to his house. Embarrassed, Will realizes that it's hypocritical to tell the kids not to drink when he drinks often himself. Later, Principal Figgins awards the club with coupons for half-off frozen yogurt for their performance, saying that he didn't know the kids in the glee club were also such good actors, clearly believing that Brittany and Santana throwing up were special effects and that no one was really drunk: their performance had scared kids into not coming to school drunk for the first time in weeks. Will convinces the whole club to sign a pledge to not drink until after Nationals, but if they do he says to call him so he can drive them home from wherever they are. Rachel kisses a sober Blaine, making him realize he is indeed gay. Instead of being heartbroken and depressed by this, she is elated, and tells Kurt that she is inspired by having had a relationship with a man who turned out to be gay — she calls it "songwriting gold."
Glee 2x13 "Comeback"
After her cheerleading squad lose a competition for the first time in seven years, coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) becomes depressed, staging her suicide by overdosing on gummy vitamins. Her colleague Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) suggests that she join the school glee club, New Directions, to lift her spirits. Hoping to create discord within the group, Sue pits members Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Rachel (Lea Michele) against one other. Her plan backfires when a duet between the two results in them deepening their respect for one another vocally. In an attempt to bring out the good in Sue, club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) takes her to a pediatric cancer ward, where they sing "This Little Light of Mine" with the patients.
Club member Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) establishes a one-man tribute band to teen singer Justin Bieber, entitled "The Justin Bieber Experience," hoping to win over his girlfriend Quinn (Dianna Agron), who he suspects still has feelings for her ex-boyfriend Finn (Cory Monteith). Sam performs Bieber's "Baby", dedicated to Quinn, and also entices the other girls in the club. Several of the male members—Puck (Mark Salling), Artie (Kevin McHale) and Mike (Harry Shum, Jr.)—are impressed by the effect he has on the girls, and convince him to let them join his tribute band. The foursome then performs "Somebody to Love", recreating the music video for the song in the auditorium, to the girls' delight. Quinn chooses Sam over Finn, but when Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) convinces Sam that Quinn cheated on him, he breaks up with her and begins dating Santana.
Meanwhile, Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink) enlists Puck to help her with her first glee club solo. With Puck's assistance, she performs "I Know What Boys Like" by The Waitresses, imagining the club members in their underwear for confidence. Sue suggests that the group performs "Sing" by My Chemical Romance at the forthcoming Regionals competition, the theme of which is anthems. They rehearse the song, and it is well received by most of the members, who disregard Rachel's suggestion that they should compose an original song. Just as things appear to be well, Sue reveals that she has become the vocal coach for New Directions' Regionals competition, Aural Intensity.
Glee 2x12 "Silly Love Songs"
Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) gives New Directions a love song assignment. Having fallen for the group's newest member Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink), Puck (Mark Salling) serenades her with Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls". Lauren finds his song choice insulting and stands him up on a pre-Valentine's date, but eventually agrees to spend Valentine's Day with him as friends.
Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) and Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.) celebrate their respective relationships by performing Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" for their girlfriends, Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) and Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz). Tina later begins to sing "My Funny Valentine" to Mike, but is too overcome with emotion, and begins to cry while continuing to sing.
Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) sets up a kissing booth, to take advantage of his popularity in the hope of kissing his ex-girlfriend Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron). He also wants to donate the proceeds to the glee club. Quinn initially refuses to buy a kiss from Finn, but does so at the insistence of her boyfriend Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), who is suspicious of their relationship. The kiss further re-ignites Finn and Quinn's feelings for one another, and they begin an affair. Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), angry for having recently had her bad behavior highlighted by the other club members, conspires to give them mono and reveal Quinn's infidelity. Finn's most recent ex-girlfriend Rachel (Lea Michele) is dismayed by his renewed feelings for Quinn, but resolves to concentrate on her career instead of romance, and leads the female New Directions members in a performance of Katy Perry's "Firework".
At Dalton Academy, a private school attended by former New Directions member Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), the object of his affection Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) announces his intention to sing a love song to his crush. Kurt believes that Blaine has feelings for him, so is disappointed when his crush turns out to be Jeremiah (Alexander Nifong), the assistant manager at a local Gap store. The Dalton Academy Warblers accompany Blaine as he serenades Jeremiah with Robin Thicke's "When I Get You Alone". Jeremiah is subsequently fired and rebuffs Blaine. Kurt confesses his feelings to Blaine, who tells Kurt that he cares for him but is terrible at romance, and does not want to risk damaging their friendship. The episode ends with New Directions assembled at Breadstix, a local restaurant, where the Warblers perform the titular "Silly Love Songs".
Glee 2x11 "The Sue Sylvester Shuffle"
Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), the coach of the McKinley High School cheerleading squad, grows disillusioned with the sport, and in an effort to recapture her love for it, plans to fire Brittany from a cannon during the team's next competitive routine. Meanwhile, football coach Shannon Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) has the school football players join the glee club, New Directions, in order to dispel rivalry between the students. In revenge for opposition to her cannon plan, Sue has the cheerleading Regionals competition moved to the same night as a football championship game, so her cheerleaders will be unavailable for the halftime show, and forces the affected squad members to resign from the glee club. New Directions' director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) announces that the club members, including the football players, will perform the halftime routine, planning a mash-up of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" with "Heads Will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. He notices and encourages the talent of Dave Karofsky (Max Adler), a bully who has previously acted violently towards the glee club members. When the football players are attacked by members of the school hockey team, Karofsky encourages them to quit the glee club, resulting in Beiste barring them from the championship game.
To ensure that the game goes ahead, glee club members Rachel (Lea Michele), Mercedes (Amber Riley), Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Lauren (Ashley Fink) join the football team. The game begins badly for the McKinley side, and when Tina is injured during a play, captain Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) takes control of the situation. He has club member Puck (Mark Salling) convince the former football players to return, and convinces cheerleaders Santana (Naya Rivera), Brittany (Heather Morris) and his ex-girlfriend Quinn (Dianna Agron) to quit the cheer squad and perform at the halftime show. Only Karofsky refuses to participate, but when he sees the positive reaction the crowd has to the routine, he joins in himself. Beiste welcomes the football players back, and they go on to win the game by intimidating the opposing side, dressed as zombies from the halftime routine.
Sue's cheer squad loses at Regionals for the first time in seven years, and she is named Loser of the Year in a televised interview with Katie Couric. Furthering her ire, the cheerleading budget is slashed due to the cannon being seen as endangering the lives of children. The money is then handed over to the glee club so they can pay to go to regionals. Karofsky dismisses Finn's suggestion that he join the glee club permanently. Finally, Quinn kisses Finn, telling him that his actions have reminded her of why she loved him.
Glee 2x10 "A Very Glee Christmas"
The William McKinley High School faculty hold a Secret Santa gift exchange, but cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) tampers with the outcome, ensuring that she receives all the gifts. Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) sends the club, New Directions, caroling around the school to raise money for a local homeless charity. As a result of their unpopularity, they are met with verbal and physical abuse from students and staff alike. At Dalton Academy in Westerville, Ohio, former New Directions member Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) sings a duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with his friend and mentor Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), who is rehearsing for Kings Island's Christmas Spectacular. Will visits Kurt seeking advice on a gift for Sue, and Kurt reveals that he has fallen in love with Blaine.
Glee club co-captain Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) attempts to make amends with her ex-boyfriend Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith). Finn is particularly hurt as Rachel is the second of his girlfriends to cheat with Puck, and tells her he is officially ending their relationship. Club member Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) discovers that his girlfriend Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) still believes in Santa Claus, and has the other members visit a Christmas grotto to reinforce her belief. Brittany asks the grotto's Santa to restore Artie's ability to walk. Hoping to maintain her faith, Artie convinces football coach Shannon Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) to dress as Santa and explain to Brittany that this particular wish cannot be granted. Brittany is bitterly disappointed, until she finds Artie a ReWalk underneath her Christmas tree, a mobility device which allows him to stand and walk with the assistance of forearm crutches. It is implied that Coach Beiste secretly purchased the ReWalk.
Will and the other faculty members discover Sue's deception and reclaim their gifts with the intent of donating them to the homeless charity. Incensed, Sue dresses as the Grinch with her favorite cheerleader Becky Jackson (Lauren Potter) as Max and steals back the presents, vandalising the choir room's Christmas decorations in the process. Brittany shows up in the middle of the theft, filling the Cindy Lou Who role - she asks "Santa" where "he's" taking the presents and decorations, and the Grinch explains that a light bulb is out and "he" is taking it to the North Pole for repairs. The club members are dismayed by the theft, but Will encourages them to give a private performance to the faculty, many of whom make charitable donations. When Sue overhears New Directions performing "Welcome Christmas", she regrets her actions and returns the presents to Will, bringing the New Directions members to decorate his apartment and spread holiday cheer.
Glee 2x09 " Special Education"
It is once again time for the show choir sectionals competition.[note 1] Due to Kurt Hummel's (Chris Colfer) transfer to Dalton Academy, the glee club is one member short of the minimum of twelve to compete at sectionals. Puck (Mark Salling) attempts to recruit members of the school football team, but they end up locking him in a port-a-potty. After he is discovered and rescued by AV Club president and wrestler Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink), he convinces her to join New Directions, despite her belief that show choir is stupid.
Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) invites school guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) to accompany him to sectionals. She accepts, and suggests that he should consider giving lead roles to members beside club co-captains Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) and Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), who typically are given the featured ballad. In light of this, Will gives the lead vocals for sectionals to Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), while Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) and Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.) are given lead dancing roles for the performance. When Brittany admits she is nervous about performing, her boyfriend Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) gives her a "magic comb" to boost her confidence. Brittany and Mike soon start spending more time together rehearsing their dance. Mike's girlfriend Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) suspects that they are having an affair, but when Artie confronts Brittany about it, she reveals that she has been avoiding him as she lost the comb and did not want to disappoint him. Artie explains that the comb was never magical, but that Brittany herself is.Kurt is introduced to the Dalton Academy Warblers at a meeting to finalize their set-list for sectionals. He is given the Warbler mascot, a canary named Pavarotti, to care for as he is the newest member of the group. Kurt learns that the songs for sectionals are selected by a council of upperclassmen, and that he must audition if he would like to perform a solo. He visits Rachel for advice, and at her suggestion auditions with "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from the musical Evita. Kurt is not given a solo, and lead singer Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) suggests that he try to fit in rather than stand out.
Emma decides not to attend sectionals, in order to avoid further strife between Will and her boyfriend Carl Howell (John Stamos). While they are gone, she and Carl marry in Las Vegas. Rachel learned earlier that during the previous school year, Finn lost his virginity to fellow glee club member Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), and has been lying to her about being a virgin. Despite the backstage drama, the performance at sectionals goes smoothly, with Quinn and Sam performing "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" and Santana performing Amy Winehouse's cover of The Zutons' "Valerie." New Directions tie for first place with the Dalton Academy Warblers, meaning that both groups will advance to regionals. Back at school, Will learns about Emma marrying Carl, and despite his shock, congratulates her as a sign of goodwill. Also at the school, Finn breaks up with Rachel after she confesses that she made out with Puck to get back at him. In the choir room, the club members are relieved that sectionals is over. The episode closes with a group performance of Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over," led by Tina and Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley).
Glee 2x08 "Furt"
The episode opens with Burt Hummel (Mike O'Malley) and Carole Hudson (Romy Rosemont) telling their respective sons, glee club members Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Finn (Cory Monteith), that they are engaged. Kurt insists that New Directions perform at the wedding and reception. Principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) announces her intention to marry herself, and glee club member Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) tells Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) that he loves her and would like to marry her in the future, offering her a promise ring.
Kurt is confronted by school bully Dave Karofsky (Max Adler). Sue sympathizes with Kurt's plight, but states that she cannot punish Karofsky unless he actually attacks Kurt. Glee club captain Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) rallies the other glee club girls into having their football-playing boyfriends defend Kurt. Finn refuses, concerned that it may jeopardize his position as quarterback. Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) and Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.) confront Karofsky, and Sam defends them when they are attacked. Later, impressed by the way Sam stood up for Kurt, Quinn accepts his promise ring. Karofsky sees Kurt and Finn practicing a wedding dance and taunts them in front of Burt. Burt is furious, particularly when he learns that Karofsky has threatened to kill Kurt. He instigates a meeting with Sue, Karofsky, and his father (Daniel Roebuck), at which Karofsky is expelled.
Finn is worried about his dwindling popularity, so Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) suggests that he reveal the truth to everyone that they had sex.[note 1] However, as Finn recently learned that Rachel never slept with Jesse (Jonathan Groff), but only told Finn so in an effort to make him jealous, he believes learning the truth will hurt Rachel because he lied that he was still a virgin.
At the wedding, New Directions perform "Marry You" by Bruno Mars as they, Burt and Carole, dance down the aisle. The couple marry. During the reception, Finn uses his best man speech as an opportunity to apologize to Kurt for not defending him, promising to do so in the future. He and the other glee club members dedicate a performance of Mars' "Just the Way You Are" to Kurt, and the new stepbrothers dance together. Following the wedding, they learn that the school board merely has issued Karofsky a verbal warning and is allowing him to return to school. Sue resigns as principal in protest, and Burt and Carole use their honeymoon savings to transfer Kurt to Dalton Academy, an all-male school with a zero tolerance policy against bullying. It is also the school to which Kurt's friend Blaine (Darren Criss) goes.
Simultaneous to the events of the Hummel-Hudson wedding, Sue advances her own marriage plans. She is visited by mother Doris, a recently retired Nazi hunter, who was an absentee parent to Sue and her sister, Jean (Robin Trocki). Doris attempts to make amends, but is continuously critical of her daughter, to the point that Sue calls her a bully and disinvites her during her wedding ceremony. Doris leaves, and Sue and Jean comfort each other.
Glee 2x07 "The Substitude"
Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is appointed acting principal of William McKinley High School after having Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) infected with the flu. Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) is also infected, and takes time off work to recover. He is cared for by his ex-wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig), which leads to them sleeping together.
Glee club co-captain Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) attempts to take over for Will, but this results in chaos. At the request of Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), club lessons are instead covered by substitute teacher Holly Holliday (Gwenyth Paltrow), whose unconventional methods include discussing Lindsay Lohan's rehabilitation in Spanish, singing "Conjunction Junction" to her English class, and roleplaying as a bipolar Mary Todd Lincoln for the History class. When Holly first arrives at glee club rehearsal, she impresses the club with her rendition of Cee Lo Green's "Forget You". Rachel is annoyed and worries that Holly may be unable to sufficiently prepare them for the upcoming Sectionals competition. Holly later wins over Rachel by duetting with her on "Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag" from Chicago.
Kurt neglects his best friend Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) in favor of his new friend Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss). Mercedes is offended when Kurt tries to set her up on a date with a football player on the basis that they are both black, and feels left out when she accompanies Kurt and Blaine to dinner, where conversation is dominated by gay issues and icons. When Sue begins a healthy eating initiative and declares a ban on "Potater Tots", Mercedes organizes a student protest and fills the tailpipe of Sue's car with Tots, causing $17,000 worth of damage.
Sue's initiative proves popular with the students' parents, and her appointment as principal is made permanent. She fires Will, who is later visited by Holly seeking advice. Holly feels out of her depth as a teacher, having enabled Mercedes' behavior. She confesses that she originally took her work seriously, until a student (Lindsay Sims-Lewis) punched her in the face, prompting her more laid-back approach. Terri arrives while they are talking and is angered by Holly's presence. Will asks her to leave, telling her that their reunion was a mistake and concluding their relationship for good.
Kurt confronts Mercedes, suggesting that she is substituting food for love and their friendship for a romantic relationship. Mercedes agrees to talk to Anthony, the student Kurt attempted to set her up with. As she departs, Kurt is approached by school bully Dave Karofsky (Max Adler), who threatens to kill him if Kurt reveals his closeted homosexuality.
At the urging of the glee club members, Sue re-instates Will. He suggests a group performance of "Singin' in the Rain", but asks for Holly's help to modernize it, resulting in a mash-up with Rihanna's "Umbrella".
Glee 2x06 "Never Been Kissed"
Glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) assigns New Directions another boys against girls singing competition.[note 1] He later sees club member Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) being physically intimidated by school bully Dave Karofsky (Max Adler). After a conversation with Kurt, who wants to join the girls team and feels the school should be doing more to tackle homophobic bullying, Will has the teams perform songs by artists of the opposite gender. Kurt is happier with the new spin on the assignment, but the other boys are unreceptive to his costuming ideas for their team. They suggest that he spy on the Dalton Academy Warblers, their competitors at the forthcoming sectionals round of show choir competition.
Kurt visits Dalton Academy and watches the Warblers perform "Teenage Dream". He is befriended by lead singer Blaine (Darren Criss), who is also gay and encourages Kurt to stand up for himself. The next time he is attacked by Karofsky, Kurt confronts him in the boys' locker room, and as the argument intensifies he is kissed by Karofsky, leaving Kurt stunned. Blaine and Kurt later try to encourage and talk to him about accepting his sexuality without being afraid of what others may think, but Karofsky denies that anything happened and returns to bullying Kurt.
Glee club member Puck (Mark Salling) is granted early release from juvenile detention on the condition that he performs community service. He befriends Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), and the two sing a duet of "One Love/People Get Ready" in the school courtyard to get personal donations from their schoolmates. They also go on a double date with cheerleaders Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) and Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris). Puck's case worker Joan Martin (Michael Hyatt) had believed he was working to rehabilitate gang members, and tells him he will return to the detention center unless he finds an alternative type of service. Puck admits to Artie that despite his bravado, he was miserable when locked up and does not want to return. Artie convinces him to complete real community service clearing litter from the highway for six weeks and offers to tutor him in school.
Several members of New Directions begin fantasizing about Coach Shannon Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) while making out to curb their arousal. Upon discovering their technique, Beiste is hurt and resigns from McKinley High. Will attempts to convince her to stay, and kisses her when she admits she has never been kissed. When the singing competition comences, the girls sing a mash-up of "Start Me Up / Livin' on a Prayer". Will invites Beiste to watch the boys' competition performance, where they sing "Stop! In the Name of Love" / "Free Your Mind" to apologize and earn her forgiveness.
Glee 2x05 "The Rocky Horror Glee Show"
The episode opens with the red lips of glee club member Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) against a black background as she sings "Science Fiction/Double Feature".[2] In the school auditorium, the glee club members rehearse The Rocky Horror Show, performing "Over at the Frankenstein Place". They are interrupted by Dr. Carl Howell (John Stamos), who accuses club director Will Schuester of trying to steal his girlfriend, school guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury. The episode continues in flashback format, with Will recalling the events leading up to Carl's accusation.
Will learns that Emma and Carl attended a midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which helped to lessen some of her obsessive–compulsive behaviors. As Emma is a fan, Will decides to direct the glee club in a production of the musical, casting co-captains Finn Hudson and Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) in the lead roles of Brad and Janet, Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.) as Dr. Frank N. Furter, and Sam Evans as Rocky. While Sam is proud of his physique and secure in his own body-image, Finn feels self-conscious at the prospect of appearing in his underwear, as the role necessitates.
Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester is approached by news station managers Tim Stanwick (Barry Bostwick) and Barry Jeffries (Meat Loaf) about producing an undercover exposé of the play, and convinces Will to involve her in the production. When Mike's parents refuse to let him play Frank N. Furter, a transvestite, Sue manipulates Carl into saving the musical. He auditions with the song "Hot Patootie", but feels that it would be more appropriate for him to play Eddie. The role of Frank, traditionally played by a male, is instead claimed by Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley).
Will grows increasingly jealous of Carl as he joins the production. When Sam becomes hesitant to wear his skimpy costume, Will decides that he will play Rocky instead, and asks Emma to rehearse the suggestive "Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me" with him. Will is later called into Principal Figgins' (Iqbal Theba) office, where he learns that Finn has been suspended for walking through the hallway in his underwear, attempting to become comfortable with his costume. He convinces Figgins to reduce Finn's punishment, and the episode returns to the opening scene as Carl confronts Will over his private rehearsal with Emma. Alerted to Sue's planned exposé, Will concedes that his motivations in putting on the production were questionable. He tells Emma that he will cease interfering with her relationship. Though he cancels the play, he has the glee club perform it for themselves, and the episode ends with a group rendition of "Time Warp".
Glee 2x04 "Duets"
Glee club director Will Schuester sets New Directions a duet assignment, offering a meal at Breadstix for the winning duo. He announces that club member Puck (Mark Salling) has been sent to juvenile detention for stealing an ATM, and introduces new member Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet). Kurt (Chris Colfer) suspects that Sam is gay and asks him to be his duet partner. Though Sam agrees, club co-captain Finn (Cory Monteith) talks them out of partnering up, fearing that Sam will be subject to bullying for having a male partner. Kurt ignores him at first, as he is still angry at Finn for the homophobic comments he made when they were roommates.[note 1] After talking with his father Burt (Mike O'Malley), Kurt decides to break his partnership with Sam. Finn and his girlfriend Rachel (Lea Michele) practice singing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" for the competition, but change their mind about using the song when Rachel suggests letting Sam win the competition to boost club morale, ensuring that he will stay in the group and increase their chance of winning if they get to Nationals.
Cheerleaders Santana and Brittany make out, but when Brittany suggests they sing Melissa Etheridge's "Come to My Window" together, Santana refuses and trivializes their relationship. Santana believes her best chance of winning is by partnering with Mercedes (Amber Riley), and together they sing "River Deep – Mountain High". Attempting to make Santana jealous, Brittany pairs up with Artie (Kevin McHale), who rejects his ex-girlfriend Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) when she asks him to duet with her. Kurt sings "Le Jazz Hot!" from Victor/Victoria by himself, and Tina and her new boyfriend Mike (Harry Shum, Jr.) duet on "Sing!" from A Chorus Line. Artie loses his virginity to Brittany, but is later informed by Santana that Brittany was using him for his voice, and dissolves their partnership. Brittany apologizes, but Artie does not accept the apology and declines Brittany's invitation to Breadstix, so she sadly goes alone.
When Sam has a slushie thrown in his face by bullies, Quinn (Dianna Agron) helps him to clean up. Later, he asks her to be his partner and attempts to kiss her. Quinn pulls away and tells him they cannot sing together, but is convinced to compete by Rachel. Rachel and Finn, dressed as a school girl and a priest in an intentionally offensive move, perform "With You I'm Born Again" by Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright, hoping to damage their own chance of winning the competition. Sam and Quinn sing "Lucky" by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. All of the club members vote for themselves (with Mercedes casting her vote for 'Mercedes & Satan'), except Finn and Rachel, who vote for Sam and Quinn, ensuring that they win the competition. Over dinner at Breadstix they form a rapport, and Quinn tells Sam that she considers the meal their first date.
Noticing that Kurt is lonely, Rachel tells him how much the club members value him and asks him to duet with her for fun. The episode ends with them singing the Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand mash-up of "Happy Days Are Here Again" and "Get Happy" in front of the rest of New Directions.
Glee 2x03 "Grilled Cheesus"
When glee club co-captain Finn Hudson believes he has found the face of Jesus in a grilled cheese sandwich, he asks for three prayers to be granted: for the school football team to win a game, for his girlfriend Rachel (Lea Michele) to let him touch her breasts, and for him to be reinstated as quarterback. When his first prayer comes true, he asks the glee club to join him in honoring Jesus through song.
Club member Kurt Hummel is devastated when his father Burt suffers a heart attack. His best friend Mercedes (Amber Riley) sings Whitney Houston's "I Look to You" to him, hoping he will find strength in faith. However, Kurt reveals that he is an atheist. Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), also an atheist, takes umbrage at the glee club singing religious songs in a public school setting, and has Kurt make a formal complaint. When confronted by guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), Sue admits that as a child, she prayed that God would cure her sister Jean (Robin Trocki), who has Down syndrome. Her prayers went unanswered, leading her to conclude that God simply does not exist.
Mercedes, Rachel and Quinn (Dianna Agron) pray for Burt, with Rachel singing "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" from Yentl at his bedside. Kurt is resistant, and later at glee club rehearsal sings The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand", stating that his faith takes the form of love for his father. He accepts an invitation from Mercedes to attend her church, where the choir sing "Bridge over Troubled Water". At the church service, Mercedes asks the congregation to pray for the Hummels.
Finn's remaining prayers also come true. Rachel comes to Finn's house one evening, and in his bedroom she admits that she would prefer to raise her children in the Jewish faith; she would not be able to have a future with him if he puts his faith in Jesus. Finn agrees that their children would be raised as she chooses, so to confirm her trust and appreciation of him, she allows him to touch the side of her breast as they make-out. Later, Finn is also reinstated as quarterback, but it occurs because his replacement Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) is injured during a game, dislocating his shoulder. Finn feels responsible and confesses his guilt to Emma, who tells him it is unlikely God is communicating specifically with him through a grilled cheese sandwich. A despondent Finn doubts his new-found faith, singing R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion".
At Burt's bedside, Kurt tells his still unconscious father that he feels he should have accepted his friends' prayers. As Kurt cries, Burt begins to regain consciousness and is able to squeeze his son's hand. Meanwhile, Sue visits Jean in her residential home and discusses God with her sister. Jean asks Sue if she may pray for her, and Sue accepts. Later, the glee club comes together to sing Joan Osborne's "One of Us". Sue watches the performance, but tells Will she will not report him for allowing a religious song. At home, Finn eats the remainder of the grilled cheese sandwich.
Glee 2x02 "Britney/Brittany"
When glee club director Will Schuester attempts to set New Directions an easy listening adult contemporary assignment, Kurt (Chris Colfer) informs them there is a Facebook group petitioning the club to perform a Britney Spears number at the McKinley High homecoming assembly. Will refuses, stating that Spears is a bad role-model. He is supported by club member Brittany, who reveals that her full name is Brittany Susan Pierce and as such she has always been dismayed that she will never be as successful as the similarly named pop star.
Will then discusses Spears with school guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury. While in her office, he meets her new boyfriend, Dr. Carl Howell, a dentist who offers to talk to the glee club about dental hygiene. A plaque test reveals that Brittany, Rachel and Artie (Kevin McHale) all require dental work. When Brittany is put under general anesthesia so Carl can fill her cavities, she experiences a hallucination in which she performs Spears' "I'm a Slave 4 U". She later returns to Carl's practice with her friend Santana (Naya Rivera) and they share a hallucination in which they duet on "Me Against the Music", where Spears herself appears. Brittany feels empowered by the encounter, and begins to act more assertively in glee club.
Elsewhere, Rachel feels threatened by her boyfriend Finn's desire to re-join the school football team, fearing that their relationship will not work if he becomes popular again. After visiting the dentist and experiencing her own hallucination, in which she performs "...Baby One More Time", Rachel begins dressing more provocatively. Her new look is received positively and cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) finds school blogger Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman) masturbating to a video of Rachel in the library. Rachel relents and encourages Finn to re-join the team. Artie's dental visit results in a hallucination of "Stronger" in which he is also a member of the football team. Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) accepts both Finn and Artie, despite the fact Artie is in a wheelchair. Rachel becomes jealous of the attention Finn is receiving now that he is back on the team and to test Finn's fidelity, she has his ex-girlfriend Quinn (Dianna Agron) attempt to seduce him. She is relieved when Finn turns Quinn down, and sings Paramore's "The Only Exception" to him in apology.
Advised by Emma to relax more, Will learns that Carl recently purchased a new Chevrolet Corvette and buys one for himself. He is confronted by his ex-wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig), who insists that he return it and cease wasting their savings. Seeing the positive effect Spears has had on the glee club members, Will relents and allows them to perform a Bob Fosse-inspired rendition of "Toxic" at the homecoming assembly, joining them on stage in an effort to impress Emma. When multiple students, including Jacob and Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink), become sexually aroused by the performance, Sue sets off the fire alarm and has the student body evacuate the auditorium. She later threatens to sue Will after being injured in the stampede. Emma tells Will to stop trying to be someone he is not. He returns his new car, and tells the club they will not be performing any more Spears numbers.
Glee 2x01 "Audition"
Following New Directions' loss at Regionals, the glee club members attempt to recruit new students to bolster their competition performances. Upon learning that Nationals will be held in New York this year, they decide to perform "Empire State of Mind" (originally by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys) in the school courtyard, hoping to pique the interest of their schoolmates. Foreign exchange student Sunshine Corazon (Charice) from the Philippines and transfer student Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) take notice and are intrigued by the performance. Club co-captain Rachel (Lea Michele) later encounters Sunshine in the girls' bathroom, and they sing an impromptu duet of "Telephone" by Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Rachel is intimidated by her performance, and directs Sunshine to a crack house instead of the auditorium in an attempt to sabotage her glee club audition. Rachel is reprimanded by glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) when this is discovered. Sunshine later auditions successfully, impressing the club members with her rendition of "Listen" from Dreamgirls.
Co-captain Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) encourages Sam to audition after overhearing him singing "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison. In the choir room, Sam, Finn, Mike (Harry Shum Jr.), Artie (Kevin McHale), and Puck (Mark Salling) sing Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" together. However, Sam declines to audition due to the low social status of the glee club members.
Shannon Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) is appointed as the new coach of McKinley High's failing football team, resulting in reductions to the glee and cheerleading budgets in favor of the football team. Will and cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) team up, hoping to drive Beiste out of the school and have their budgets restored. Amidst her scheming with Will, Sue also demotes Santana (Naya Rivera) from her position as head cheerleader after learning she has had breast implants, replacing her with Quinn (Dianna Agron). Artie, who is disabled, asks Finn to help him join the football team. He hopes to win back his girlfriend Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), who has broken up with him to date Mike. Beiste believes that Finn is colluding against her by forcing her to reject a wheelchair-dependent student, and drops Finn from the team, appointing Sam as the new quarterback. Will is unable to convince her to take Finn back, but realizes that his hostile behavior is hurting his new colleague. Later, he defends Beiste from a Sue-driven sexual harassment accusation by Brittany (Heather Morris), and apologizes, re-earning Sue's enmity.
Acting on her refuelled rivalry with Will, Sue contacts Dustin Goolsby (Cheyenne Jackson), the new director of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline. Dustin is able to secure permanent US residency for Sunshine and her mother on the proviso that she joins his club. Sunshine confesses that she felt driven out of New Directions by Rachel's hostile behavior. After admitting that she values herself above the other club members, Rachel sings "What I Did for Love" from A Chorus Line alone in the auditorium, before heading to the choir room to apologize.

SEASON 1
Glee 1x22 "Journey to Regionals"
When cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester announces that she will be one of the judges at Regionals, along with Josh Groban, Olivia Newton-John, and local news anchor Rod Remington, the glee club members worry that New Directions will soon be disbanded. Principal Figgins stands by his condition that glee club must place at Regionals to continue, despite club director Will Schuester's protestation that Sue is attempting to sabotage them. Will turns to guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury, who reveals that she has begun dating her dentist, Carl Howell.
Rachel kisses Finn when he encourages her to be more optimistic. At Regionals, Aural Intensity is first to perform, singing a mash-up of "Magic" by Olivia Newton-John and "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban. Will gives New Directions a pep talk, and Finn professes his love for Rachel just before going on stage. The club pays tribute to Journey, performing "Faithfully", a mash-up of "Any Way You Want It" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", and "Don't Stop Believin'".
Quinn's (Dianna Agron) mother, Judy Fabray (Charlotte Ross), comes to watch Quinn perform. She tells Quinn that she kicked her father out of the house after she found out he was having an affair and invites Quinn to come back home. Quinn announces that her water has broken, and is rushed to the hospital, where she gives birth to a girl. While the other New Directions members accompany Quinn to the hospital, Rachel stays at Regionals to watch Vocal Adrenaline's performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody". She asks their coach, her mother Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel), to teach at McKinley High, however Shelby reveals that she is stepping down as Vocal Adrenaline's coach to settle down and start a family. She adopts Quinn's baby, whom she names Beth at Puck's (Mark Salling) request.
During the pre-vote discussion, the other celebrity judges insult Sue for her lack of fame. Aural Intensity is named runner-up, and Vocal Adrenaline wins, with New Directions coming in last. Emma argues with Figgins about the club's future, but he remains intent on disbanding it. Will has accepted their loss, and professes his love for Emma and kisses her. Sue overhears New Directions' performance of "To Sir, with Love" in appreciation of all that Will has done to help them grow. It is revealed that Sue voted for New Directions to win, and has agreed to end her blackmail of Principal Figgins in exchange for giving New Directions at least one more year to prove themselves and win Regionals. She explains to Will that she may not like him, but she respects his work with the students. Will tells the club of its extension, and performs "Over the Rainbow" with Puck in celebration.
Glee 1x21 "Funk"
Former New Directions member Jesse St. James returns to rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline. They give a performance of "Another One Bites the Dust" in the McKinley High auditorium, and TP New Directions' choir room as intimidation ahead of the Regionals competition. The New Directions members become depressed, and club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) tries to reinvigorate them by asking them to perform funk numbers. Quinn (Dianna Agron) performs "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" to vent her frustration of being an unwed teenage mother. Mercedes (Amber Riley) sympathizes with Quinn and invites her to move in with her; later, she, Puck (Mark Salling) and Finn (Cory Monteith) perform "Good Vibrations" as their own "funk" number, based on Marky Mark's band name being the Funky Bunch.
Will and Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) finalize their divorce. Attempting to deal with his sorrow and cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester's (Jane Lynch) incessant bullying, Will seduces Sue with a performance of "Tell Me Something Good" and asks her out on a date, standing her up to humiliate her. Sue withdraws the cheerleading squad from the upcoming Nationals competition and becomes bed-bound. Will sees the negative impact on the cheerleaders and realizes that some of them might lose their college scholarships. Will knows that hurting his nemesis did not make him feel any better, and encourages her to be there for her girls. Sue reenters and wins Nationals, but later gives Will two options: either house her new trophy inside New Directions' choir room, or kiss her. As Will is about to kiss her, Sue backs out and determines that the trophy will be set up in the choir room as a reminder of her superiority.
In retaliation to Vocal Adrenaline's vandalism, Puck and Finn slash the tires of their rivals' Range Rovers. Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) thinks they should be expelled, but Vocal Adrenaline director Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel) disagrees as she decides not to press charges, but she insists they pay for the damages. She then recommends taking the money out of Glee's budget, but Will says that the club will go bankrupt. Finn then says that he and Puck will get jobs and Shelby agrees. Puck and Finn get jobs at Sheets-N-Things, working for Terri. Expressing the dissatisfaction in their lives, Puck, Finn, Terri, customer Sandy Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky), and employee Howard Bamboo (Kent Avenido) perform "Loser" in a dream sequence. Terri finds that Finn reminds her of Will, and befriends him, helping him with his funk assignment.
Jesse further breaks Rachel's (Lea Michele) heart when he lures her to the parking lot, where he and the other Vocal Adrenaline members throw eggs at her. Rachel, being vegan is distressed by the baby chicks that died and says she is having nightmares about the mothers of the chicks chasing her. The male New Directions members, led by Puck, are talked out of violent retaliation by Will, and instead the group performs "Give Up the Funk" to show Vocal Adrenaline that they are not defeated by their bullying. Their showdown intimidates their rivals, who have never been able to pull off a funk number.
Glee 1x20 "Theatricality"
The episode begins with Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) telling Tina that she can no longer dress as a goth, alarmed by a spate of pseudo–vampirism in the school, inspired by the Twilight series. She briefly changes her style, before dressing as a vampire and convincing Figgins that if he does not allow her to wear her preferred clothes, her vicious Asian vampire father will bite his face off.
When New Directions member Rachel Berry discovers that rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline are planning on performing a Lady Gaga number at Regionals, Will (Matthew Morrison) sets the club a Gaga assignment. The girls and Kurt create costumes inspired by Lady Gaga and perform "Bad Romance". The rest of the male club members dress as Kiss and perform "Shout It Out Loud". Puck (Mark Salling) suggests to Quinn (Dianna Agron) that they name their daughter Jackie Daniels, as in Jack Daniel's. Later, in an attempt to show her he is serious about being a father, he has the other guys who dressed as Kiss sing "Beth" with him, suggesting they give the name to their daughter. Quinn agrees that he can be present at her birth.
While spying on a Vocal Adrenaline rehearsal, Rachel realizes that their director, Shelby Corcoran, is her birth mother. She introduces herself, and Shelby makes her a better Lady Gaga costume. Will meets with Shelby, concerned that she is not as invested in forging a relationship as Rachel is. Shelby confesses that she can no longer have children, but wishes she could have her baby back, rather than the now fully grown Rachel, whom she feels does not need her. She tells Rachel that instead of trying to act like mother and daughter, they should just "be grateful for one another... from afar... for a while." Rachel hugs her goodbye, and they duet on an acoustic version of "Poker Face".
Kurt's father Burt (Mike O'Malley) invites Finn and his mother Carole (Romy Rosemont) to move in with them. Finn feels awkward sharing a room with Kurt, who has a crush on him, and during an argument insults several items in his bedroom as being "faggy" after losing his temper. Burt overhears this and kicks Finn out for using the term, even if it costs Burt his relationship with Carole. Kurt is bullied for his Gaga costume by school athletes Karofsky (Max Adler) and Azimio (James Earl). Finn creates his own costume out of a shower curtain, and tells them he will not let them hurt Kurt, backed by the rest of the glee club.
Glee 1x19 "Dream On"
Bryan Ryan (Neil Patrick Harris), a former McKinley High glee club member, arrives as an auditor from the school board. He speaks to the glee club, asking everyone to write their biggest dream on a piece of paper. He then takes Artie's paper and tosses it into the trash, making a point that their dreams will never come true. Having failed to realize his own dreams, he intends to cut the glee club. Will (Matthew Morrison) convinces him that it is not too late to pursue his dreams and sings "Piano Man" with him. They both audition for the role of Jean Valjean in the local production of Les Misérables, singing "Dream On" as a duet. Bryan decides not to cut the glee club, and even presents them with new costumes and sheet music, but changes his mind when Sue (Jane Lynch) announces that Will landed the lead role. Will gives up his role in Les Misérables to Bryan in order to save the glee club.
Rachel confides in Jesse (Jonathan Groff) of her lifelong dream to discover the identity of her mother. While they are searching through boxes of records from her basement, Jesse takes a cassette tape from his jacket and pretends that it came from the box. The tape is labeled as a message from mother to daughter. Rachel refuses to listen to the tape, stating that she is not ready. Jesse later meets with Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel), the coach of Vocal Adrenaline, who reveals that she is Rachel's biological mother, but a contractual agreement with Rachel's two fathers prevents her from meeting with Rachel until Rachel is 18. Jesse reveals that though he had "befriended" Rachel just to get more practice, he had actually started liking her. She implores Jesse to convince Rachel to listen to the tape. Back at Rachel's house, Jesse starts the tape playing as Rachel enters her bedroom, then leaves her to listen to it. On the tape, Shelby sings "I Dreamed a Dream", leading to a duet with Rachel in a dream sequence, ending with Rachel back in her room in tears.
After Bryan's discouraging speech, Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) retrieves Artie's paper from the trash and learns that his biggest dream is to become a dancer. Tina would like to dance with Artie, but he falls off his crutches when he tries to stand up from his wheelchair. Tina comforts Artie by showing him some of the latest research in spinal cord injury treatments. While waiting for Tina to buy pretzels at the mall, Artie fantasizes about being able to stand up from his wheelchair and dances to "The Safety Dance" in a flash mob dream sequence, in which Tina and other fellow Glee clubbers Mike, Brittany, Mercedes, Matt, and Kurt also appear as backing dancers. He asks Emma (Jayma Mays), the school guidance counselor, for advice on how to cope with the possibility of walking again in light of the new research, but is disappointed when Emma tells him that such treatments may not become available for a long time. Tina continues to offer to dance with him but he declines, insisting that she choose another partner but agreeing to sing during the dance. Tina chooses Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.) as her dance partner as Artie leads the glee club into "Dream a Little Dream of Me".
Glee 1x18 "Laryngitis"
When glee club member Puck has his mohawk shaved off at the insistence of his dermatologist for medical purposes, he discovers he is no longer considered a credible bully. He realizes that Mercedes has become popular since joining the cheerleading squad, and resolves to date her. Mercedes initially attempts to dissuade him, but after singing a duet of "The Lady Is a Tramp", she warms to him. Puck's former girlfriend Santana (Naya Rivera) is jealous, and she and Mercedes sing "The Boy Is Mine". When Mercedes realizes that Puck has returned to being a bully, she breaks up with him and resigns from the cheerleading squad.
Meanwhile, Rachel (Lea Michele) realizes that some glee club members are faking their singing. She tells Will (Matthew Morrison), complaining that she is doing most of the work, exhausting herself and getting ill in the process. She reveals the non-participants as Finn, Quinn, Puck, Brittany, and Santana. Will gathers the students and gives them a new task for the week - each Glee club member will have to do solos, and each must choose a song that best represents their feelings.
Rachel then confronts the non-participating glee members and insults them, leading her to sing Miley Cyrus's "The Climb". But when she starts losing her voice, she goes to the doctor. Later, after an examination by Rachel's doctor reveals that she suffers from tonsillitis and may need to have her tonsils removed, she is afraid to have the surgery, fearing it will affect her voice and believing that her singing prowess is her only asset. Finn, who accompanies Rachel to her doctors appointment, tries to convince her that he loves everything about her and that there's more to her than her voice. He tells her that if she lost her ability to sing then Jesse would no longer find her attractive. Rachel tells Finn that she still cares about Jesse and that he needs to move on, prompting Finn to sing "Jessie's Girl" as Rachel's silhouette undresses. To put her fear into perspective, Finn introduces her to his friend Sean (Zack Weinstein), who was paralyzed from the upper chest down during a football game. At first, Rachel is nervous and overwhelmed by the meeting - but Finn forces her to stay as Sean tells her about his grueling experiences with his disability and how he realized that a person is not just one single thing. She then begins to understand why Finn brought her and thanks Sean as she leaves.
In the meantime, Kurt is jealous of the time his father Burt (Mike O'Malley) is spending with Finn, and attempts to emulate Burt's personality. He dresses in outdoorsman gear, sings John Mellencamp's "Pink Houses" during a glee club rehearsal, and attempts to have a fling with Brittany (Heather Morris), making out with her in his bedroom and ensuring that his father is aware of his new behavior. Frustrated that Burt is still spending time alone with Finn, Kurt reverts to his former personality and sings "Rose's Turn". Burt overhears his performance, praises Kurt's singing and apologises for not spending enough time with him. He reassures Kurt that he still loves him, and always will, no matter who his son chooses to be with.
Rachel eventually recovers her voice after taking the antibiotics her doctor prescribed. She goes back to Sean's house to thank him again, and offers to give him singing lessons. They start singing U2's "One", and the image and music switch between her duet with Sean and the rest of the Glee club's own rendition of the song in a stage rehearsal. The episode ends with a tearful Rachel holding Sean's hand while they sing the last lines.
Glee 1x17 "Bad Reputation"
When glee club member Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) steals a video of cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) performing Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" in Jazzercise, the club members decide to post it on YouTube as a prank. Sue is mortified, and in retalliation gives Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) a list she has found, called a "glist", which ranks the glee club members based on a sexual promiscuity quotient. Figgins tells club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) that he must either find the creator of the list, or he will be forced to disband the glee club and suspend all of its members. Will reprimands the club members, and for their weekly club assignment, he has the students find songs with bad reputations and rehabilitate them, performing Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" as an example.
Sue is ridiculed by her co-workers regarding her appearance in the video, and makes an enemy of her new colleague, alcoholic astronomy teacher/badminton coach Brenda Castle (Molly Shannon). Sue is reminded by her sister, Jean (Robin Trocki), who has Down Syndrome, that when they were hurt as children they would volunteer at an animal shelter as a reminder there was always someone less fortunate than themselves. In light of her sister's advice, Sue decides to act as a therapist to school guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), informing her that Will has been unfaithful to her. Emma confronts Will in the teachers' lounge, publicly shaming him.
Glee club members Kurt, Mercedes (Amber Riley), Artie (Kevin McHale), and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) are upset over not being included on the list, while Brittany (Heather Morris) is upset at not being listed among the top three - especially after her stints at making out with everyone in the school, boys, girls, the school janitor. They perform a rendition of "U Can't Touch This" in the school library to cause a disruption in the hope of earning a bad reputation. Their plan backfires, and the librarian asks them to perform at her church's Sunday service. Next, Kurt confesses to Sue that he is the one who stole her video. Prior to his confession, however, Sue is contacted by Olivia Newton-John, who requests her help remaking the "Physical" video. As a result, Sue actually thanks Kurt for his actions. The song's re-release gains Sue a position in the top 700 recording artists, ending the ridicule by her colleagues - in which she rubs it in their faces. She donates her share of the profits to her sister's residential care facility.
After apologizing to Emma and presenting her with flowers, Will sees a depressed-looking Quinn (Dianna Agron) in the hallway and suspects that she is responsible for the list. He confronts Quinn, who confesses. To prevent her from being suspended, Will lies to Figgins that no culprit has been found, but convinces him that as no new lists have been posted, they should drop the matter.
Rachel asks Puck to assist her in their glee assignment, creating a video for David Geddes' "Run Joey Run". Unbeknownst to each of them until the video is completed, she also has Finn (Cory Monteith) and Jesse (Jonathan Groff) triple-cast in the role of her boyfriend, Joey. They are offended to see they were all playing the same role and were edited in at different points during the video. Puck and Finn become angry, and Jesse breaks up with Rachel as a result. The episode closes with Rachel singing a rendition of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" as the club members leave the classroom.
Glee 1x16 "Home"
In preparation for an interview with Splits Magazine, cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) demands that new cheerleader Mercedes Jones lose 10 lbs in a week. She reserves the school auditorium for cheer practice, so glee club director Will Schuester has to find the club a new rehearsal space. He visits a local roller rink where he finds former glee club member April Rhodes, who tells him that she is the mistress of the wealthy eighty-year old[1] tycoon who owns the rink. Upon learning that Will is looking to sublet his apartment, April invites herself to visit. After spending the night sharing a bed, Will forbids April from staying over again and tells her she is worth more than being a mistress. April says she will break up with her tycoon.
Mercedes struggles to eat healthfully and her mid-week weigh-in shows that she has gained 2 lbs. She begins extreme dieting and faints in the school cafeteria. Former cheerleading captain Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) sympathizes with Mercedes, commending her for being so comfortable in her own body and advising her not to let being a cheerleader detract from that. Though Mercedes is embarrassed, Quinn tells her that she is beautiful. On the day of the pep rally, Mercedes abandons the planned routine, and instead sings "Beautiful". The journalist from Splits Magazine assumes that Sue engineered the performance and expresses his admiration for her, promising her positive publicity from his article.
Glee club member Kurt Hummel sets up his widowed father Burt (Mike O'Malley) with Finn's widowed mother Carole (Romy Rosemont). He believes that it will help him become closer to Finn, for whom he has feelings. Finn is upset when Carole sells their old furniture, and stops his late father's recliner from being sold. He is initially hostile to her dating someone new, but begins to bond with Burt over sports at a group dinner. Kurt feels left out, and later asks Finn to help him break up their parents. Finn initially agrees, but relents after Burt tells him that he loves Carole and would never hurt her. They watch a basketball game together and Finn allows Burt to sit in his father's recliner, while Kurt watches on sadly through the window.
When April attempts to break up with her tycoon, he has a stroke and dies. His wife gives April $2 million in hush money, and April uses some of it to buy the auditorium for the glee club. She plans to go to Broadway to launch the first all-white production of The Wiz. The episode ends with April and the glee club performing "Home" from The Wiz.
Glee 1x15 "The Power Of Madonna"
Coach Sue Sylvester has her cheerleaders, or Cheerios, emulate Madonna, so that they will be more empowered in their cheerleading routines. Continuing her blackmail of Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) from "Hell-O", Sue has Madonna tracks played over the school intercom throughout the day. Glee club director Will Schuester overhears the girls in the club discussing difficulties they are having in relationships and life. Rachel (Lea Michele) asks the other girls for advice on a boy pressuring her to have sex, while Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) tells them that Artie (Kevin McHale) has asked her to start wearing more revealing clothes if she wants to be with him. When Will observes the Cheerios performing a routine with stilts to "Ray of Light", he is inspired to set a Madonna-themed assignment to restore the girls to equal status. The male club members are unimpressed (except for Kurt), even when the girls perform "Express Yourself". As club co-captains, Rachel and Finn (Cory Monteith) also perform a mash-up of "Borderline" and "Open Your Heart".
When Will ridicules Sue's fashion sense, club members Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Mercedes (Amber Riley) give her a makeover, recreating Madonna's "Vogue" video. Guidance counsellor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) is inspired by Madonna's example, and tells Will that she intends to lose her virginity to him that evening. Santana (Naya Rivera) offers to take Finn's virginity, and Rachel and her boyfriend Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff) also decide to have sex, leading to a dream sequence performance of "Like a Virgin" between all three couples. Ultimately, Emma and Rachel do not go through with it, but Finn does have sex with Santana. He later hides this from Rachel, having concluded that the sex was meaningless, and that he truly regretted it; this is contrasted with Rachel, who despite not going through with it, claims she did as she realized it was no big deal.
Jesse transfers to William McKinley High School, leaving his rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline to join New Directions, so that he and Rachel can be openly together. There is resistance from the group, who believe that this will result in fewer solos, and suspect that Jesse is a spy for his former club. In retaliation, Kurt and Mercedes join the Cheerios and perform "4 Minutes" with them during a school assembly. They tell Will that they were unhappy about never having solos, and will be in both groups. The boys sing "What It Feels Like for a Girl", and decide to treat the girls better. Artie apologizes to Tina for his prior misogynistic behavior, and they kiss. The episode ends with Finn welcoming Jesse into New Directions and letting him and Rachel know he won't interfere in their relationship, despite the fact that the two still have feelings for one another. The entire glee club sings "Like a Prayer" backed by a gospel choir, with Kurt and Mercedes each having a solo in the song.
Glee 1x14 "Hell-O"
Following the suspension from her position at William McKinley High School, as seen in "Sectionals", cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester blackmails Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba), slipping him a date rape drug and taking an incriminating photograph of them in a compromising position. He allows her to return to work at the school, where she immediately returns to plotting to bring down the glee club, New Directions. Club members Finn Hudson and Rachel Berry are now dating, although Finn still is not over his ex-girlfriend Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron). Sue enlists cheerleaders Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris) to seduce Finn. He breaks up with Rachel and goes on a date with both Brittany and Santana, but comes to the realization that he does want to be with Rachel. In the interim, Rachel meets Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff), the lead singer of New Directions' rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline, at a local music library. The two perform an impromptu duet of Lionel Richie's "Hello", and Rachel becomes enamoured with him. Eventually, the New Directions members learn about the blossoming relationship and conclude that Jesse is using Rachel, and threaten to expel her from the club unless she breaks up with him. Rachel asks Jesse to keep their relationship a secret and turns Finn down when he asks her to get back together with him.
Glee club director Will Schuester begins dating the school guidance counselor, Emma Pillsbury. Emma suffers from mysophobia and is uncomfortable kissing Will. She admits that she is still a virgin, and requests that they take their relationship slowly. While dancing, Will sings Neil Diamond's "Hello Again" to her. When Emma is preparing dinner for Will several nights later, his wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) arrives at the apartment, and tells Emma that she and Will danced to "Hello Again" at their prom in 1993. This distresses Emma.
On a visit to Carmel High School, Will meets Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel), the coach of Vocal Adrenaline. She and Will end up at his apartment making out, but Will is unable to continue and tells her about his relationship problems. Shelby suggests that as Will had been with Terri since he was 15 and has immediately moved on to a new relationship, he ought to take some time out for himself. She is later seen in the episode observing a kiss between Jesse and Rachel, the former meeting her eyes briefly.
When Emma later confronts Will with a copy of his high school yearbook, confirming that "Hello Again" was his and Terri's song, he is apologetic. He and Emma decide to put their relationship on hold in order to deal with their separate issues. The episode ends with New Directions performing "Hello, Goodbye" by The Beatles, with Emma watching.
Glee 1x13 "Sectionals"
As a result of a technicality in the show choir competition rules, glee club director Will Schuester is not allowed to accompany New Directions to sectionals. Guidance counsellor Emma Pillsbury postpones her own wedding by several hours so that she can take the club in his place, although her fiancé, football coach Ken Tanaka, feels she is choosing Will over him.
Most of the glee club has learned that Puck (Mark Salling), not Finn, is the father of Quinn's baby. They decide not to tell Rachel (Lea Michele), believing that she will tell Finn. When coming up with their set list, Mercedes sings "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" after Rachel acts like her usual bossy self, saying she would sing the ballad at Sectionals. After Mercedes' performance, Rachel agrees that Mercedes deserves to sing the solo and the two hug. Afterwards, Rachel deduces the secret and tells Finn, and he attacks Puck and confronts Quinn, who tearfully admits the truth. Angered by Quinn's and Puck's betrayal, Finn leaves the club on the eve of sectionals, and has to be replaced by school reporter Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman). New Directions arrive at the event to discover their competitors have received an advance copy of their set list, and are performing the songs they had chosen. Emma calls Will, who talks with Finn and convinces him to rejoin New Directions. The club scrambles together a new set list. Emma then confronts rival choir directors Grace Hitchens (Eve) and Dalton Rumba (Michael Hitchcock), while New Directions are forced to choose new performance pieces at the last minute, aided by the return of Finn. Rachel asks Mercedes to perform another song, but Mercedes insists, with the rest of the club agreeing, that Rachel is the best choice to perform "on the fly". She gives a solo performance of "Don't Rain on My Parade", receiving a standing ovation after finishing. The group then performs "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Rolling Stones, to the applause and cheers of the audience. After their performance, Grace attempts to confess her duplicity to the judges, but they have already unanimously decided that New Directions has won the competition.
Having previously discovered that his wife Terri was faking her pregnancy, Will tells her he no longer feels the same way he did when they first fell in love. He later attends Ken and Emma's delayed wedding to find that Ken has ended the relationship as a result of Emma's feelings for Will. She announces her intention to leave McKinley High School, explaining that it will be too painful for her to carry on working with Will and Ken. Back at school, Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) suspends cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) for leaking the glee club's set-list, and has Will reinstated as New Directions' director. The glee club members show Will their trophy and perform "My Life Would Suck Without You" for him. As Emma prepares to leave the school, Will chases after her and stops her with a kiss. Both are happy, but uncertain of what will happen next.
Glee 1x12 "Mattress"
Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) convinces Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) not to include a photograph of the glee club in the school yearbook, as in previous years, glee club photographs have been heavily defaced in the library copy of the yearbook by fellow students. Club director Will Schuester personally buys a meager section of advertising space in the book so that a photograph featuring at least two members can be included. Fearing unpopularity, the club nominate Rachel to represent them in the photograph. Rachel convinces Finn (Cory Monteith) to appear alongside her, but after being teased by his peers, he drops out. When it transpires that the school photographer (John Ross Bowie) is soon to direct a commercial for his brother-in-law, a local mattress store owner, Rachel convinces him to cast the glee club in it, believing that local celebrity status will prevent the other students from mocking them.
Will is dismayed to learn that his close friend Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), the school guidance counsellor, has arranged to marry her fiancé, football coach Ken Tanaka (Patrick Gallagher), on the same day the glee club will compete at sectionals. Will goes on to discover that his wife Terri has been lying to him for months about her supposed pregnancy. She actually experienced a hysterical pregnancy and hid the truth from him by wearing a pregnancy pad under her clothes, while planning to secretly adopt glee club member Quinn Fabray's (Dianna Agron) baby. Will walks out on her and spends the night at the school, sleeping on one of the mattresses given to the glee club in payment for their commercial.
Sue informs Will that the club receiving payment for the commercial revokes their amateur status, and thus their eligibility to compete at sectionals. Quinn, who has been trying to convince Sue to let her appear in the cheerleaders' photographs despite being removed from the team due to her pregnancy, reminds Sue that as their coach she has often given the cheerleaders perks which would also render them ineligible for competition. She demands that Sue sacrifice one of the cheerleaders' six pages in the yearbook to the glee club. Sue agrees, and accepts Quinn back onto the cheerleading team, but Quinn tells her she no longer wishes to be a cheerleader. Will announces that he will not be accompanying the club to sectionals, as he was the one who accepted payment, and as such they will only be allowed to compete without his involvement. The episode ends with the glee club having a group photograph taken for the yearbook, which is subsequently defaced by their schoolmates.
Glee 1x11 "Hairography"
New Directions' director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) suspects that cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester has been colluding with rival glee clubs, and visits the Jane Addams Academy for girls recently released from juvenile detention. When their club director Grace Hitchens (Eve) reveals the extent of the school's under-funding, Will invites her club to perform in the McKinley High auditorium. Will is intimidated by their opposition, but Rachel (Lea Michele) assures him that the girls are using the power of "hairography"—frequent, dramatic hair-tossing—to distract from the fact their singing and dancing ability is limited. Will purchases wigs for New Directions and has them utilize hairography themselves, performing a mash-up of "Hair" and "Crazy in Love". Dalton Rumba (Michael Hitchcock), glee club director at Haverbrook School for the Deaf, feels slighted by the invitation Will extended to the Jane Addams Academy, and arranges for his own club to also perform at McKinley High. His club duets with New Directions on John Lennon's "Imagine", and Will realizes that the new mash-up and hairography routine is not working. He removes it from the club's set-list, replacing it with a performance of "True Colors". Unbeknownst to Will, Sue reveals two songs from New Directions' line-up for sectionals to Grace and Dalton, suggesting they have their own clubs perform them to gain an edge in the competition.
Quinn begins to doubt her decision to give her baby to Will's wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig), and re-considers her stance on raising the baby with Finn instead of Puck (Mark Salling). She tells Terri she wants to keep the baby, but in an effort to change her mind, Terri's sister Kendra (Jennifer Aspen) has Quinn babysit her three unruly sons. Quinn invites Puck to babysit with her and the two bond, however when Quinn discovers that Puck spent the evening sexting his ex-girlfriend Santana (Naya Rivera), she re-commits to having the baby adopted, believing her daughter deserves a better father. Elsewhere, Kurt (Chris Colfer) gives Rachel a make-over, ostensibly to help her attract Finn, but in reality attempting to sabotage her chances with him. Finn is unimpressed with Rachel's new look before telling her he remembered having the conversation with Kurt about what he liked in girls. Rachel confronts Kurt, stating that even if he is in love with Finn, she will always have a better chance "because [she's] a girl". But Kurt tells her that they are both kidding themselves: Finn is in love with Quinn and nothing will change that.
Glee 1x10 "Ballad"
Glee club director Will Schuester has the club split up into pairs to sing ballads to one another. As Matt Rutherford (Dijon Talton) is absent, Will is forced to take his place and sing with Rachel, who develops a crush on him. Recalling the last time a student had such strong feelings for him, Will remembers Suzy Pepper (Sarah Drew), a cute but geeky young woman who drooled over him in class, bought him novelty gifts and called him at home. When her feelings were not reciprocated, she grieved by eating a habañero pepper, shipped straight from Mexico which led to her to have her esophagus transplanted. Rachel visits Will's apartment, where his wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) puts her to work cooking and cleaning. After an encounter with Suzy Pepper, in which Suzy explains that the two of them have similar circumstances and that chasing after Will won't repair Rachel's self-esteem, Rachel realizes her feelings for Will reflect her concerns about her own self-worth, and apologizes for her behavior. Afterwards, Will reassures her that she will find the man of her dreams who loves her for who she is.
Finn is paired with Kurt (Chris Colfer), who advises him to sing his ballad to his unborn daughter. Glee club director Will Schuester is informed that the school budget will not cover a handicap accessible bus to transport the glee club to sectionals, meaning Artie will have to travel separately from the rest of the club. Will encourages the other club members to support Artie, not only by holding a bake sale to raise funds for a handicap bus, but also by spending time in wheelchairs to experience what life is like for him. Meanwhile, Quinn is struggling to cover the medical expenses of her pregnancy, and threatens to break up with Finn if he cannot pay her ultrasound bill. Puck fights with Finn, who he feels is not doing enough to support Quinn. By including cannabis in the cupcakes, Puck ensures the bake sale is a success and offers Quinn the money raised. She apologizes for previously calling him a loser, but refuses to accept the money, and is relieved when Finn is able to find a job (with the help of Rachel).
Kurt and Rachel compete for a solo on "Defying Gravity". The part (normally performed by a female) is initially offered to Rachel, but when Kurt's father (Mike O'Malley) complains to Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) that his son is being discriminated against, Kurt is allowed to audition. His father receives an anonymous abusive phone call about his son's sexual orientation, and Kurt deliberately sabotages his own audition to spare his father further harassment.

Meanwhile, club members Quinn and Finn have grape slushies thrown in their faces by the other students ready to take them down as they are no longer untouchable because of their high status. Their popularity has slipped due to Quinn's pregnancy and their partaking in the glee club. Her relationship fails, however when she discovers that Rod is cheating on her. Returning to form, Sue removes Quinn from the cheerleading squad because of her pregnancy. When Puck's mother (Gina Hecht) encourages him to date a Jewish girl, Puck begins to court Rachel. At first she excuses herself by saying she needs a strong male role who can perform a solo. The two ultimately break up as a result of Rachel's feelings for Finn and Puck's feelings for Quinn. With the help of her sister Kendra (Jennifer Aspen), Terri blackmails her doctor into faking the sonogram using Quinn's ultrasound DVD, in order to continue hiding the fact she isn't really pregnant.
School reporter Jacob Ben Israel (Josh Sussman) uncovers news of Quinn's pregnancy. To protect Finn and ensure Jacob will not release the story, Rachel agrees to give him her underwear. When the glee club stage a walk-out in protest against Sue and Will's constant arguing, the two make amends and Sue steps down as co-director. When Quinn blames her tiredness on her glee club participation, Sue renews her resolve to destroy the club, planning to sabotage Will's personal life. Sue tells Will's wife Terri that guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury has romantic feelings for Will. Determined to stay close to her husband, Terri takes a job as the school nurse, despite having no medical qualifications. She encourages Emma's boyfriend Ken Tanaka (Patrick Gallagher) to propose to her, which he does. After asking Will if there is any reason she should not marry Ken, and being warned off Will by Terri, Emma accepts his proposal. Terri is still hiding the fact she experienced a hysterical pregnancy from Will, and upon realizing how much her life is changing due to her pregnancy, Quinn agrees to let Terri secretly adopt her baby.
Club member Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) is exhausted by his extra-curricular activities, so Terri gives him pseudoephedrine tablets, which Finn shares with the rest of the males in the glee club. The effects of the tablets enhance their performance, and they give an energetic mash-up of "It's My Life and "Confessions Part II". When Kurt (Chris Colfer) tells the girls the secret behind the boys' performance, they, too, request the tablets from Terri, and give a high-spirited mash-up of "Halo" and "Walking On Sunshine". Club member Finn is concerned for his future, believing his girlfriend Quinn to be pregnant with his child. Emma suggests that instead of aiming to attend college on a football scholarship, Finn should utilize his musical talent. Believing Rachel's inclusion to be the glee club's only chance at success at Invitationals, Finn feigns romantic interest in Rachel and takes her on a date. Rachel, realizing she is unhappy performing in the school play and excited over Finn's interest in her, ultimately returns to the glee club. Meanwhile, Kurt, Mercedes and Tina are informed of Quinn's pregnancy by Puck, but he as well pretends Finn fathered the child. Finding out about this, Rachel becomes furious with Finn and confronts him asking if he is actually attracted to her at all. Finn insists the kiss they shared was honest, but Rachel remains unconvinced and defects from glee club once again, returning to the school play, where she is given full artistic control. April, accompanied by the glee club, performs Carrie Underwood's "Last Name" for the entire school, receives the standing ovation she always dreamed of. Finn convinces coach Ken Tanaka (Patrick Gallagher) to let Kurt try out for the team. Ken is delighted to find such an asset for the team and adds Kurt as the kicker. When Finn's girlfriend Quinn tells him she is pregnant, Finn worries that his future prospects will be diminished by fatherhood. He asks glee club director Will Schuester to coach the football team at dancing, believing it will help them to improve, increasing his chances of securing a football scholarship. Finn confides Quinn's news to his best friend Puck, who later confronts Quinn, claiming to be the baby's father, since she said she was a virgin when they had sex. Quinn rejects Puck, calling him a "Lima loser" who could never support her and the baby like Finn. Will's wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) reveals to her sister Kendra (Jennifer Aspen) that she experienced a hysterical pregnancy and is not really carrying Will's baby. Kendra suggests that they acquire a baby, and when Terri learns of Quinn's pregnancy from Will, she confronts her, asking questions about her prenatal care.
Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester approaches former glee club director Sandy Ryerson and enlists him in her plan to sabotage the club. She blackmails Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) into appointing Sandy as the school's new Arts director, and together they hold auditions for a school production of Cabaret, hoping to entice away the glee club's star, Rachel Berry. Rachel feels slighted when Will awards Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) a solo song, so auditions for the musical and is given the lead role. When Will refuses to reassign the solo song to Rachel, she quits the club.

Former glee club director Sandy Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky) also joins the group, having arranged for singer Josh Groban to be at their next performance. Although the star compliments their rendition of "I Wanna Sex You Up", he reveals that he only attended to ask Sandy to stop stalking him.
In Will's absence, the glee club hires Dakota Stanley (Whit Hertford), a well-known choreographer, to help coach them to Nationals. Cheerleaders Quinn (Dianna Agron), Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris) hope that the notoriously harsh Stanley will prompt some members of the club to quit, furthering their plan to sabotage the club. Although Stanley is heavily critical of the group, Rachel convinces the members that their differences give them a unique edge, and fires the choreographer. The cheerleaders also lead Mercedes to believe that Kurt has feelings for her, leaving her hurt when he rejects her advances. She believes he has feelings for Rachel and angry at Kurt, Mercedes breaks the windshield of his car, and sings "Bust Your Windows" He later confesses to her that he is gay, and the two make up. Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is angry that the club is now stronger than ever, and punishes Quinn and Santana. The group is opposed to his choice of song—"Le Freak" by Chic—so as a compromise, Will suggests they also learn "Gold Digger" by Kanye West. Rachel's crush on Finn leads her to join the celibacy club, which he attends with his girlfriend, Quinn Fabray, who is head of the Cheerios. Rachel soon realizes that the celibacy club is really a place where teens try to get as physically close to each other as possible without technically engaging in any kind of sexual activity. Quinn and the other members try to pick on Rachel, but she stands up for herself, impressing Finn during the process. Rachel also convinces the Glee club members to secretly change their performance to "Push It" by Salt-n-Pepa to give audience members what they want, "sex." The song is well received by the student body, however complaints from parents lead Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) to compile a list of pre-approved, sanitary songs which New Directions must choose from in future. Will is angry with Rachel for her actions, and when Quinn, Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris) audition for the club with a tongue-in-cheek rendition of "I Say a Little Prayer," he awards Quinn with Rachel's solo on "Don't Stop Believin'." Sue later recruits Quinn to help her bring the glee club down from the inside.
At home, Will is being pushed by his wife, Terri, to find a second job so that they can afford to move into a new house before the birth of their child. Football coach Ken Tanaka (Patrick Gallagher) observes them, and warns Emma not to become Will's rebound girl. Terri discovers that she is actually experiencing a hysterical pregnancy, but she cannot bring herself to tell Will, so she lies to him that they are having a son. She tells him to quit working as a janitor, offering up use of her craft room as a nursery for the baby so they do not need to move. Following a private rehearsal, Finn and Rachel kiss, and he is suddenly overwhelmed and experiences premature ejaculation. Will's efforts are derided by Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), head of the school's successful cheerleading team, the Cheerios. When the school's football coach Ken Tanaka (Patrick Gallagher) allows Will to try to recruit football team members, he discovers that quarterback Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) is secretly a talented singer. He plants marijuana in Finn's locker, and blackmails him into joining New Directions. Finn, determined not to disappoint his widowed mother, complies.
Will takes New Directions to see Vocal Adrenaline, a rival club, perform. He is accompanied by Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), the school's mysophobic guidance counselor, who has a crush on him. Believing he needs to support his family, Will regretfully tells the club he is resigning, and applies for a job as an accountant. Finn is attacked by the football team for his involvement with New Directions, and initially decides to quit the club. The team traps Artie in a portable toilet which they intend to tip over, however, Finn refuses to take part. He apologizes to the Glee club members, and the group resolves to continue without Will.
